Risk assessment - Sunday School - draft - 19/05/21

To ensure before each session:

  • Ensure group sizes adhere to current government guidelines - as of May 17 no maximum size to group, but the group will be sized according to the space (annexe) and the age of those booked in. Pre-booking essential.
  • Primary school children and under will be kept in separate groups from secondary school age and:
    • There will be no mixing between the bubbles. Bubbles will be reviewed each half-term.
    • Each Bubble will be assigned appropriate ratio of leaders as per guidance for safeguarding (see appendix) but at least 2 DBS-cleared adults.
  • Setting out of space for social distancing (to ensure as much as possible 2m between leaders and children where possible)
  • Group leaders to be encouraged to take part in lateral flow testing.
  • Information to be displayed throughout building re Covid Secure information

Pre-booking into the group:

  • All parents issued guidance on symptoms attending and not to attend if symptomatic / subject to quarantine etc. (to be put on church website / booking link)
  • Questions on booking form as to whether children will attend and all parents advised of guidance via email when booking (automated response).
  • All attendees asked to follow government guidance on self-isolation after symptoms and/or positive test/contact tracing/returning from foreign travel.
  • Parents asked to check their child's health form (we can send on current details via email before the session)

Building Prep:

  • Ensure ventilation where possible.
  • Fire escape routes must be clear.
  • Ensure annexe has been cleaned after any previous group (this should be possible by Clare's cleaning routine, but if there is a Saturday booking, we will find someone to clean the surfaces to be used during the session).

Arrival to group:

  • Social distancing measures of 2m to be maintained where possible, including during arrival and departure of the annexe.
  • Children to be escorted from church to annexe by leaders without parent(s) to minimise numbers where possible (families with children to be seated at back of church if possible?)
  • Everyone to use hand sanitiser on entry to the annexe.
  • Any over the age of 11 must arrive wearing a face mask unless they are exempt (this includes leaders).
    • Action Plan in place in event of a suspected coronavirus case known to enter premises or YP generally becomes unwell during the session (see appendix)
  • Register taken - details to include school, year etc (health details to be kept on ChurchSuite)
  • Do not permit others to enter the room to avoid contact.
  • Discourage children from bringing anything other than 'essential' items into the group (achieved via booking form and when entering group).
  • Discourage parents from attending unless really necessary to reduce numbers in the space (an issue for our pre-school and SEN children).

During the session:

  • Suitable social distancing policy in place (2m where possible).
  • No physical contact between persons from different households/bubbles.
  • No singing or deliberately raised voices during session.
  • Young people instructed to remember the 2m and no touching rules when chatting to their friends (though it is recognised this is difficult with younger children)
  • Annexe windows kept open where possible
  • Regular cleaning of hard surfaces likely to be touched regularly with appropriate sanitiser wipes/spray.
  • No distribution of bibles or other books or kit other than essentials.
  • All common materials e.g. pens / crafts etc to be quarantined before and after use
  • No food and drink
  • Hand sanitise after group and between moving spaces.

After the session

  • Details of attendance to be kept for 21 days as part of Track and Trace in addition to those kept for safeguarding purposes.
  • ChurchSuite register to be used after session - Sue can take details from the registration used as people enter the building. She will also need to record those who were leading the group.

Use of toilets:

  • Children will be encouraged to use toilet at home before arrival. Toilets will only be used if necessary.
  • Regular cleaning of surfaces likely to be touched with appropriate sanitiser spray or sanitising wipes.
  • Toilets supplied with disposable hand towels, hand sanitiser and wipes.
  • Ideally annexe toilet restricted to Sunday School use.

Appendix 1 - Ratios - adults to children

I'll add in here current Church Of England ratios for children's work

Appendix 2 - If someone becomes unwell during a session:

  • Parent/guardian will be contacted to pick up child.
  • Child will wait in the annexe front to be collected.
  • If child exhibits any COVID-19 symptoms, parents are advised to contact the NHS 111 online coronavirus service to book a test
  • (https://111.nhs.uk/covid-19).
  • If they are unable to use the online service, they should be advised
  • to telephone 111.
  • Leaders to decide appropriate actions in the annexe e.g. sanitise surfaces likely to have been touched by the unwell YP.
